1 in 15 Americans over 40 smell odors that arent really there

1 in 15 Americans over 40 smell odors that arent really there1 in 15 Americans over 40 smell odors that arent really thereDo you smell what I smell? While some coworkers are going about their day, your nose may be telling you that something in the office is on fire. The good news is that you are not alone in smelling this. Phantom smells may actually be mora common than we think.InJAMA Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery, researchers from the National Institutes of Health andNational Institute on Deafness and Other Communication Disorders discovered thatone in 15 Americans over the age of 40 have from phantom odor perception, - they are experiencing smells that are not actually there.Whats that smell?Using nationally representative data from 7,417 participants over 40 years of age, the researchers found that many Americans said they sometimes smelled an unpleasant, bad, or burning odor when nothing was there. More women experience these phantom smells than men. Twice as many women a s men reported these phantom odors, according to the new study.Smelling a weird smell is not just a distraction, it affects your health. When you cannot smell properly, your body pays a price. Problems with the sense of smell are often overlooked, despite their importance. They can have a big impact on appetite, food preferences, and the ability to smell danger signals such as fire, gas leaks, and spoiled food,Judith A. Cooper, acting director of the NIDCD, said in a statement.Researchers do not know the exact causes of phantom odor perception, but the condition was associated with people in poorer health, those who a history of head injuries, and those who were experiencing dry mouth symptoms. The researchers also suggest that having overactive smell cells could also be a cause. The causes of phantom odor perception are not understood, Kathleen Bainbridge, one of the authors of the study, said. The condition could be related to overactive odor-sensing cells in the medial cavity or p erhaps a malfunction in the part of the brain that understands odor signals.

How Fiction Put the Science in Engineering

How Fiction Put the Science in Engineering How Fiction Put the Science in Engineering Some people dismiss science fiction as frivolous kid stuff or a poor substitute for serious literature. Its just as easy to defend the genre by concentrating on how it can predict the future. Theres a long list of gadgets and inventions that were first discussed in science fiction geosynchronous communications satellites, computer worms, Segways, wall-mounted home theaters, exoskeletons, flip phones, to name just a random sample. Its said the chief reason Charles Prior Hall could not defend his for the waterbed was that Robert Heinlein had first described it more than 25 years earlier.Science fiction makes imaginary worlds sometimes too real. In 1944, the magazine Astounding Science-Fiction published a story that described the workings of an atomic bomb (based on published papers) and illustrated it with a mushroom-shaped cloud. The magazine received a visit from the FBI agents looking for a security breach.Even so, looking at the science fiction that way misses the larger point. A good science fiction story should be able to predict not the automobile but the traffic jam, Frederik Pohl, a master of the craft, once said. What makes science fiction valuable is not that it produces predictions, but that it provides inspiration. Its easy to see this in the names of companies and products. For example, iRobot, maker of the ubiquitous Roomba as well as military robots, is a sly nod toward Isaac Asimovs groundbreaking book, I, Robot. (The modem manufacturer U.S. Robotics took its name from a company in that book.) Big data pioneer Palantir Technologies is named after the seeing stones in Lord of the Rings. TASER was originally an acronym for Thomas A. Swifts Electric Rifle. Even the terms robot and android were popularized in fiction before they were adopted by technologists.Science fictions power of inspiration also comes up in discussions with engineers and innovators. Ask them, and they will tell you how it unlocked their dreams and set free their imaginations. We know that because we asked. On the following pages, seven engineers and inventors explain how science fiction affected their futures. This article interviewing engineers about how fiction inspired them the cover story for February 2015.

Avoiding Exit Wounds when Leaving your Job

Avoiding Exit Wounds when Leaving your Job Avoiding Exit Wounds when Leaving your Job Job transition is a crucial process in any profession or career path, and, if you are to avoid exit wounds, (such as being fired or accepting an unsuitable job as you have no alternatives) it should not be left to chance.Where possible, leaving your job should be carefully orchestrated and should be planned months in advance of it happening as part of your long-term career strategy. The benefits of this more engineered approach to career transition include things likeBeing able to leave your current firm on your own terms,Having the time to generate more career options and find the ideal job,Being in a stronger bargaining position with potential new employers,Being able to secure more favorable terms and, of course, the all important higher salaryIn this article, we talk about some of the processes that you can adopt to ensure that you are able to leave your job in a way that enables it to become a stepping stone to the next stage of your career and avoid those exit wounds that can seriously hinder your future employment prospects.Rule 1 Getting a job is easier when you have a jobEmployees who are currently in a role are generally more employable than those who are between roles, so avoid leaving a job without securing a new job. This may be easier said than done as you cant control if you are fired or laid off. Yet, there are strategies that you can adopt to help you stay more in control of your career so you are more likely to be applying for jobs while in post- and these areTry to avoid resigning in haste, usually as a result of some workplace grievance. Try and get a transfer, try and work it out or start applying for a new job, but dont just bail out. Hold your nerve, maintain focus and plan. Also, be aware of signs that your job may be at risk, and never bury your head in the sand. Engage and ask questions during monthly company briefings. Always know the financial pos ition of the company and, more importantly ,your department, as well as the market. If there is good evidence to suggest that the company may be in decline and there is a risk of layoff, this is the time to start considering alternative roles.Be honest with yourself. If you are severely under performing you may be at risk of being fired. Dont ignore the signs, try and understand why it isnt working and fix it and/or start looking for a more suitable job (they are not mutually exclusive). Dont wait until you are pushed as you will be in a worse position.Rule 2 Dont burn bridges, build themIf there is an acrimonious split from an employer there can be a temptation to hit out, sever ties and effectively burn bridges. Never do this, as you could easily have to collaborate with ex-colleagues or employers in the future and it will be much better for you if they are cooperative rather than wanting to sabotage your career. But, lets be more positive than this, you should view your current co lleagues as key members of your current and future network who can help you get other jobs or win new business. Your future success can depend on the power of your network and how well you use it.So be proactive about your network, particularly when you know you may be leaving. Aim to settle any outstanding issues/disputes that you may have, particularly with senior staff. When you leave, write individual goodbyes and thank yous to your key contacts and a general one to the wider group and ensure it includes an invite for them to connect with you on LinkedIn. Join any ex-employee LinkedIn groups that may be available as you will find powerful allies in these groups too.Rule 3 Organize your referencesIdentify potential referees and then ask them if they would be prepared to be a reference for future employment. Also, ask them if they would write a testimonial for your LinkedIn profile.Rule 4 Avoid leaving your employer in the lurchAlways try to honor the notice period. Dont be tempte d to leave early, (unless you can negotiate it), to join a new employer as doing this while at the saatkorn time leaving your current employer in the lurch will damage your reputation and relationship with your former employer. This is something you must avoid doing if you are to build bridges with them and engender goodwill so theyll potentially assist you in the future.

How to Write Submissions for The New Yorker Magazine

How to Write Submissions for The New Yorker MagazineHow to Write Submissions for The New Yorker MagazineThe New Yorker magazine was founded in 1925 by Harold Ross. Ross polished his literary chops at daily meetings of the famous Algonquin Round Table, of which he was a charter member. The witty Dorothy Parker and Robert Benchley contributed to the magazine in its early years and were also members of that literary legend. The magazine has serious literary status. Throughout the 20th century, getting your work published in The New Yorker was a major milestone, and the magazine continues to be one of the most venerated publishers of short fiction. Writing Legends Grace Its Pages The magazine has given visibility to and helped make the careers of such successful writers like John OHara, John Cheever, John Updike, F. Scott Fitzgerald, Raymond Carver, J.D. Salinger, Janet Frame, Salman Rushdie, and Alice Munro. Despite the universal decline in magazine readership since the birth of onl ine publishing, The New Yorker (under the leadership of editor David Remnick) continues to thrive, boasting over 1,240,000 readers. The New Yorker Style Though the magazine has contributed mora than its fair share of short stories to the literary canon, that doesnt mean everything it publishes is conservative. The magazine has also taken chances on some fairly experimental writers like George Saunders and Haruki Murakami. What that means for you, the writer, is that even if your work veers toward the less traditional, feel free to give it a shot. Sally will always believe that she knew at once- even before she heard Peters voice, she knew what had happened. If an accident had happened, it would not be to her six-year-old, who was brave but not inventive, not a showoff. From Deep-Holes by Alice Munro. Odds of Getting Published The odds of getting published here, of course, all depend on who you are. If youve never published anything, the odds are very, very slim that youll ge t published based on space availability. The New Yorker publishes only one story per issue (devoting one issue per year to new fiction). It is likely that nearly every ambitious American writer tries to get into The New Yorker at some point or another. And, while the magazine does take chances on new writers, it tends to draw from itsstable of established writers, like Munro and Murakami. That said, if youre one of the young writers the magazine takes a chance on, if yourwork is accepted, then your career is made, so its worth taking a shot. How toSend Submission Submit your story as a PDF attachment using the magazinesonline submissions form. Email your submission to fictionnewyorker.com. Military Vacation Leave and Job Training

Military Vacation Leave and Job TrainingMilitary Vacation Leave and Job TrainingWhatever their rank, all military personnel get the same amount of annual paid time off. Military members get 30 days of paid leave per year, earned at the rate of 2.5 days per month. Military leave is a bitdifferent than traditional leave at civilian organizations, partlybecause it counts weekend days against the balance. And according to military regulations, leave must start and end in the same local area. For example, if you begin your leave on Monday, you canbedrngnis leave the local area until Monday, even if you are off-duty on Saturday and Sunday. Conversely, if you schedule your leave to end on a Friday, you must return to the local area on that Friday, even if youre not scheduled for work until the following Monday. Regular leave is approved or denied by the military members immediate supervisor. Requesting Emergency and Unearned Military Leave Emergency leave, which is applicable when a mili tary members family member dies or is seriously ill, is approved by the commander or first sergeant. Emergency leave daysstill count against the 30-day leave total. If circumstances warrant, a military member could borrow leave he or she hasnt earned yet from his or her future allowance. With afew exceptions, commanders are usually reluctant to approve leave that hasnt been earned yet. It is because, under the law, a person who is discharged (for any reason) and who has a negative leave balance must repay the military one days base pay for each day in the hole as of the date of the discharge. How the Military Calculates Leave Leave is based on the governmentsfiscal year, which beginsOct. 1 and ends Sept. 30. If the fiscal year ends and a military member has a surplus of leave time, she or he can carry over a maximum of 60 days to the next fiscal year. Exceptions to the 60-day limit may be allowed if there are unusual circumstances. But under fruchtwein situations, if a military member has 65 days of leave as of Sept. 30, he or she loses those five extra days as of Oct. 1. In most cases, the cost of travel is at the members expensewhile on leave. However, in the cases of emergency leave, while assigned or deployed overseas, or deployed at sea (such as in the Navy or the Marine Corps), the military will arrange free transportation back to the United States. Once members arrive at the port of entry, the cost of travel to their leave area becomes their responsibility. And when the leave is finished, the military will arrange for free transportation from the port back to the overseas or sea duty assignment. Selling Back Extra Leave Time Surplus leave can be sold back at the time of reenlistment and separation or retirement. Each day of leave saved can be sold back for one days base pay. A military member can only sell back a maximum of 60 days of leave during his entire military career. He or she can spread those 60 days out over different periods, for exam ple. They may sell back 10 days of leave during the first reenlistment, then 10 days during the next reenlistment, and so on. If one reenlists while in a combat zone, money received for selling leave is tax-free. Military members may opt to take terminal leave when theyre discharged or retire. For example, lets say you are scheduled to be discharged on Sept. 1, and you have 30 days of leave saved up. You can out-process from the military 30 days early, then continue to receive full pay, including base pay, housing allowance, food allowance, and any special pay, until your official date of discharge. The Armys Christmas Exodus During the two weeks around the end-of-year holidays, the Army all but shuts downbasic trainingand advanced individual training (AIT)schools. The Air Force and Navy do not shut down basic training but do shut down many of their job schools (such as tech schools and A-schools). This period is known as Christmas exodus. Recruits are usually allowedto go home on leave at this time if they want to, even if it results in a negative leave balance. Those recruits who choose not to take leave at this timeare normally assigned to do details such as answer phones or cut the grass since most of the instructors, and drill sergeants will be away on leave. DifferenceBetween Leave and Passes A pass is nonchargeable time off. During normal off-duty time, troops are considered to be on a regular pass, for which they use theirmilitary ID cards. With a few exceptions, a military person can leave the base when off-duty without special permission. Another type of pass is a special pass, such as a three-day pass. behauptung are issuedby the commander, first sergeant, or (sometimes) supervisor for time off given as a reward for superior performance. Usually, a special pass cannot be used back-to-back with leave, and cannot in most cases be used in conjunction with a weekend or other scheduled off-duty time. Leave During Training Periods In the Air F orce, job training is called technicalschool, or sometimes tech school for short. In the Navy, initial job training is called A-school (advanced job training is called C-school). The Army refers to their job training as AIT (advanced individual training). The rules concerning military leave dont end after boot camp graduation. For non-prior-service enlistees, there are restrictions such as curfew, restriction to base, and wearing of civilian clothes for the first portion of job training. Each branch of the military handles these slightly differently. Technical School Training Restrictions(Air Force)A-School Restrictions(Navy)AIT Restrictions(Army) TheMarine Corpsdoes not impose any special restrictions on their Marines during job training. However, all non-infantry Marines have to attend a special basic combat training course before they continue on to job training. TheCoast Guardalso does not impose restrictions during their job training, because CG personnel do not go to A-school d irectly out of basic training. They must spend a year or so at their first duty station, doing general dutiesbefore they get to choose a rating (job) and go to A-school. Its important to remember that, except for the Marines, leave is not usually authorized following basic training.
